Landmarks >> Seven Wonders of the World
A Project called the New Seven Wonders of the World attempted to revive the concept of Seven Wonders of the Ancient World with a range of contemporary wonders. A famous poll was held by the private foundation of the New Seven Wonders in 2007. Here is the revised list of the Seven Wonders:

•    The Pyramid at Chichén Itzá (before 800 A.D.) Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Chichén Itzá, the most popular Mayan temple city, stood as the economic and political center of the Mayan civilization. Several of its structures- the pyramid of Kukulkan, the Hall of the a Thousand Pillars, the Temple of Chac Mool, and the Playing Field of the Prisoners- can still be witnessed today and exhibit outstanding commitment to composition and architectural space.

•    The Taj Mahal (1630 A.D.) Agra, India

This enormous tomb was created on the commands of the renowned Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the fifth Muslim ruler, to honor the reminiscence of his dearly loved late wife Mumtaz. Structured out of pure white marble, The Taj Mahal is considered as the perfect jewel of art in India. Consequently, Shah Jahan was jailed and he could only glance at the beautiful structure created by him through a small window in his cell in the prison.

•    Petra (9 B.C. - 40 A.D.), Jordan

On the outskirts of the Arabian Desert, Petra had been the dazzling capital of the empire of Nabataeans  of King Aretas IV (9 B.C. to 40 A.D.). The Nabataeans, being the Masters of water technology, gave their city with great water chambers and tunnel structures.

•    Machu Picchu (1460-1470), Peru

During the 15th century, the Incan Emperor Pachacútec created a city in the clouds over the mountain known as Machu Picchu ("Old Mountain"). This outstanding settlement is situated halfway up the Andes Plateau, above the Urubamba River and within the Amazon jungle. It is believed that this habitat was abandoned by the Incas because of the outbreak of small pox and after the defeat of the Incan Empire by the Spanish; the region remained ‘lost’ for about three centuries. In 1911, it got rediscovered by Hiram Bingham.

•    The Great Wall of China (220 B.C and 1368 - 1644 A.D.) China

The Great Wall of China was created to combine the present ramparts into an integrated guard system and to keep Mongol tribes right out of China. It is the greatest monument that is man-made ever built and it is dubious that it is the only one noticeable from space. Thousands of people must have devoted their entire lives to create this gigantic structure.

•    The Roman Colosseum (70 - 82 A.D.) Rome, Italy

This marvelous amphitheater in the heart of Rome was built to give nepotism to victorious legionnaires and to rejoice the Roman Empire’s grandeur. Presently, through history books and films, we are even more responsive and sensitive about the games and cruel fights that had happened in this showground, all for the pleasure of the audience.

•    Christ Redeemer (1931) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The height of this Jesus statue is about 38 meters tall, overlooking Rio de Janeiro, atop the Corcovado Mountain. Built by French Sculptor Paul Landowski and structured and designed by Brazilian Heitor da Silva, it is one of the most sought after monuments across the globe.
